[c. 1315]
Description
Petitioners
Gerard de Savoye (Savoy), valet of the king.
Name(s)
de Savoye (Savoy), Gerard
Addressees
King.
Occupation
valet of the king
Nature of request
Savoye requests the grant of the custody of the forest of Oleron in the form that others have previously held it for the request made to the king by the king of France and for his service. The king of France requested that Savoye be granted the sergeanty of Saujo and while Savoye resided in the garrison of Berwick the king granted the same sergeanty to Bernard de France because the king was not aware of the grant to the petitioner.
Nature of endorsement
Staverton.
Places mentioned
Sanyon (Saujo), Saintonge, [France]
Doleyroun (Isle d'Oleron), [Saintonge, France]
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
King of France
Bernard de Fraunche (France).
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1315 as the grant of the sergeanty of Saujo to Bernard de France referred to in the petition dates to 5 May 1315, and it seems unlikely that the petition will be too long after this grant though it may postdate the fall of Berwick to the Scots in 1318 as the petition makes reference to service there (Gascon Rolls, 1307-17, no.1339, p.382).
