Date
[1302]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Prittlewell.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The prior and convent request that the demand for £100 be released as there are 18 monks in the house, as the previous prior made a fine in that sum by distress to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer for one year to the use of the king, and this has been fully paid. The house is only assessed at £130 and the treasurer and barons through the sheriff and bailiffs demand the same sum from year to year to their great ruin.
Nature of endorsement
They should go to the Exchequer and account for the manors of Eastwood and Rayleigh and then show the state of their house, and the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer should do according to what by their discretion ought to be done.S [Exchequer].
Places mentioned
Prittlewell, [Essex]
Eastwood, [Essex]
Rayleigh, [Essex].
People mentioned
Henry de Essex.
Note
The petition is dated to 1302 as the petition belongs to an original file of petitions returned to the Exchequer from the summer parliament of 1302. For a confirmation of this dating, see SC 8/314/E107.
