Description
Petitioners
Free tenants of the vill of Ely and the hundred of Witchford.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The free tenants request that a remedy is ordained as they hold freely without tallage but in the vacancy following the death of Bishop Kilkenny the keeper, Master John Walrain, demanded a tallage from them and the people of the hundred and the vill gave 100s. each to his own use so that they were able to reside in their ancient estate, but he entered the sums on his account and they have been grievously distrained every since for the sums in times of vacancy as if they were villeins.
Nature of endorsement
They should sue to the Exchequer for these three petitions, and let the rolls and memoranda of the Exchequer be scrutinised for the times of vacancy of the bishopric of the aids that are paid and from which vills and hundreds. And the king should be certified of this in the next parliament at Westminster at Michaelmas.
