Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of St Albans.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
[Petition in 2 parts:]1) The prior and convent requests remedy as the king granted them the custody of their abbey and all its lands and goods, but now the queen distrains them for her gold that is rendered for the vacancy where they consider they should be quit and discharged.2) They request remedy of the distress that is made on them for the gold since the king released the abbot and convent from all debts that they owed the king in return for a gift for the king's Scottish war, and for a release of 1,000 marks that the king owed the abbot and convent.1)
Nature of endorsement
Lord John de Codelee says that the gold was requested for the fine which the abbot made with the king to have the charter of cacancy, and that it was not requested for the 1,000 marks annually that is rendered for the custody in each vacancy.2) The council considers that the prior and convent should pay the 130 marks for the gold for the fine of 1,300 marks which they made for having the king's charter for the time of vacancy, and pay nothing for the vacancy.
