Date
[1302]
Description
Petitioners
Monks of St Albans.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
They request that their charter be observed and that they by quit of the claim made in the name of the kings on the monks of Saint Albans to the palfrey, cup, ring and a moiety of the dogs of the abbot, as by their charter they ought to be quit of this, since it states that the king has granted them the custody of the abbey and all the temporalities of the said abbey, as fully and entirely as any abbot of this place in the past used to have and hold the temporalities, things and goods, and that the prior and convent should have full and free administration of the temporalities, things and goods and may do and arrange on this what they see will be good, as the abbot of the place can arrange and as when the house is not vacant.1)
Nature of endorsement
Because the things contained in this petition are regalities and annexed to the royal dignity they ought not to be remitted by the terms of the charter shown.2) Let it remain.
Places mentioned
St Albans, [Hertfordshire].
Note
The petition dates to 1302 as a Latin summary of the petition and response was enrolled on a parliament roll now identified as coming from the summer parliament of 1302 (PROME, Roll 12, Introduction, and Text/Translation).
