Nature of request
It is requested that the sheriffs of the four northern counties be commanded not to allow the replevin of distresses until the thrives of corn for which the distresses were taken be rendered. The king's ancestors gave for the support of the paupers of the hospital certain thraves of corn throughout Yorkshire, Cumberland, Lancashire and Westmorland, one thrave from each plough ploughing, the arrears of which thraves have been levied and are still being levied by the king's writ to the sheriffs as the king's own render and debt, those who are distrained come and release their distresses by the common writ of replevin, as a result of which the king's alms are wholly embezzled and spoiled and the maintenance of the said paupers diminished and greatly harmed1)
