Date
[? 1302]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas Grelle (Grelley).
Name(s)
Grelle (Grelley), Thomas
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Grelle requests that the king take notice as he did homage to the king for his land in Lancashire but the bailiffs of Thomas of Lancaster distrain him grievously for homage and for rent, though Thomas's father had refused these and Grelle's ancestors had always done homage and service to the king.1)
Nature of endorsement
Coram toto consilio.2) If he considers himself injured in anyway by undue and intolerable distraint then he should obtain justice for himself by the common law if he wishes.3) He should wait to the coming of Lord R. le Brabazon.
Places mentioned
Lancaster, Lancashire
Lancashire
Wales.
People mentioned
Thomas Grelle (Grelley)
[...] de Baylol (Balliol)
Edmund [Crouchback, Earl of Lancaster]
Robert Grelle (Grelley), heir of Thomas Grelle
John Wake
R. le Brabazon.
Note
The petition is dated to? 1302 as the majority of petitions in this file probably date to this year. The petitioner received livery of his estates in 1300 and was finally ordered to do homage to the earl of Lancaster in 1305 so that a date of 1302 is not unreasonable (CCR 1296-1302::p.372; CPR 1301-7, p.502).
