Date
[c. 1299]
Description
Petitioners
Nicholas de Cauenecourt, son of Nicholas de Cauenecourt of Kent.
Name(s)
de Cauenecourt, Nicholas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Cauenecourt requests an inquisition and that reason will be done as his lands in Well have been seized into the king's hand by the late sheriff by writ of the Exchequer because it was alleged that the land was Jakemyn de Cauenecourt's and that he was an alien and of the power of the king of France, though he died 30 or more years ago and held nothing of the king in chief nor committed any trespass against the king and nor has the petitioner.
Nature of endorsement
He should go to the Exchequer.
Places mentioned
Well, Kent.
People mentioned
William Trussel, late sheriff of Kent
Jakemyn de Cauenecourt.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1299 as the petition refers to Trussel as being the late sheriff of Kent and he left office in April 1298, and many of the other petitions in this file seem to date to about this time (List of Sheriffs, p.67).
