Nature of request
The abbot of Bury St Edmunds requests that whereas Henry I granted, and the current King confirmed, that no secular person or minister of the King should interfere in religious business, Hemegrave and Cambridge were assigned to enquire into a false allegation made against the abbot, by which inquisition writs were issued to cause the abbot to come before the King to answer in the matter, that no secular person interfere with the said franchise but only the abbot and his ministers and that the said writs be repealed.

The petition may date to 1341 when the king's justices were directed to hold a session at Bury St. Edmunds in 1341, for hearing and determining complaints as to oppressions by ministers in the county of Suffolk, and the abbey protested that this was an infringement of their chartered rights against the holding of any secular courts in the town (VCH Suffolk, vol. II, pp. 56-72).
