Nature of request
Inquisition taken at Bristol before Canynges and Candever in the fifth year of Richard II [1382] in which Sutton, Somerwell, Brit, Pountfreyt, Woodford, Edyngdon, Inhyn, Wilkins, Hanam, Carleton, Ash and Gratele say on their oaths that Boreman, with 28 mariners, was captured in the Scilly Isles in a barge of Normandy by Fulbroke, Borde and others and brought to Bristol as prisoners, and on Monday before the Assumption in the 49th year of Edward III [1375] Spicer was granted custody of Boreman in the Guildhall of Bristol. No ransom was offered or paid for any of the prisoners, nor was any assessment made by the captors. They do not know whether Boreman became pledge for the mariners. He escaped about half a year after his capture owing to Spicer's carelessness, but without his consent and against his will.
