Nature of request
[Petition in 2 parts. The petition is badly damaged with parts of the left-hand side of the petition being missing or so badly stained to be illegible:]... whereas on 8 May in the tenth year of the last King's reign [1422] [the King granted] Butler a commission to Calais to enquire ... concerning which grievances the commissioners and the mayor of Calais under their letters ... , that the council assign two or three of their members to duly examine the said certificates or other ... of the said commission ....He also requests that whereas when he should have returned to England with the said commission he was impeached by malice, and his goods were arrested and he was imprisoned until released by the Duke of Exeter and Earl of Warwick, and his enemies are judges in his neighbourhood so that he cannot have justice, that his enemies be made to come before the council to justify their deeds.
