Nature of request
Robert, bishop of London, recounts that Berners held the manor of Islington of the bishopric of London as of the castle of Stortford by the services of a knight, 7s 4d yearly and suit of court, and until his wife Amice died they were seised of the same by force of a fine levied at York on the octave of the Trinity in the 31st year of Edward I [1303] before the justices of the Common Bench between them and Roger Berners and Nevill. The right of the manor descended through the family until it came to Richard, now a minor, and the manor was seised into the King's hand by James' forfeiture and a judgment returned against him at the Parliament held at Westminster in the eleventh year of the King's reign [1388], the keeping of which William [sic] and manor pertains to the petitioner. The bishop requests delivery of the manor with its issues and profits.
