Description
Petitioners
Nicholas Brembre, customs officer of London.
Name(s)
Brembre, Nicholas
Addressees
Chancellor.
Occupation
customs officer of London
Nature of request
Nicholas Brembre, customs officer of London, states that he owes the King large sums of money by virtue of his office, and that he in turn is owed a large sum of money, by virtue of his office, by Peter Gracian, a Lombard, who is in prison because he cannot pay this and other debts. Peter is owed several sums by Geroline Arege, Gabriel his brother, and Thomas Lyppy, merchants of Bologna, who have left London, leaving their attorney, Saynt Bartholomeu Saynt, to levy their debts and trade with their goods. Saynt is said to have in his possession goods and merchandise belonging to these merchants to a great sum. Nicholas requests a writ to the sheriffs of London to inquire, by Lombards and others, into what goods belonging to these merchants Saynt has, and for what sum he is accountable to them, and into other circumstances; and to seize these goods and chattels into the King's hand to pay Nicholas and discharge Peter, so that Nicholas can sooner pay the King. And Saynt is to be made to find sufficient security for the sheriffs that he will not leave London until this matter is fully inquired into and determined.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] It is granted by the council: and a writ is to be sent to the Sheriffs of London to inquire and inform, and to arrest the goods etc., and to receive security.[None on dorse]
