Chancellor.
Nature of request
[Badly faded] The petition states that Peter Hippe, a Fleming and an enemy of the King, brought to Chepstow in his ship certain wines belonging to Bernard Tast, for which the freight amounted to £72; and Peter had Bernard arrested to answer to him for that sum before the Mayor of the staple at Bristol, and he was condemned to pay him it, and is still in prison for that reason, although `that sum came to the King as the goods of his enemies forfeited to him. It requests a letter to the Mayor of the staple to have both Peter or his attorney and Bernard come before him to explain why the King will not be served with this sum as goods forfeit to him.

Note
A note on the dorse states that this petition has come from a Chancery file from the time of Richard II, and a date in the early part of the reign would seem to accord with the hand and language, and with the dating of the rest of the petitions from this file. Petitions Relating to Wales, p.481 dates to 1369-72, but this is probably too early.
