Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/300/14967A
Date
[1388-1396]
Description
Petitioners
Eleanor Driffeld, widow of Thomas Driffeld.
Name(s)
Driffeld, Eleanor
Addressees
Archbishop of York, Chancellor of England.
Nature of request
Eleanor, widow of Thomas Driffeld, states that her husband died in the service of the King of Spain on his last expedition, and that all his goods and chattels were taken into the King's hands for the arrears of the farm of the alien priory of Andwell, and valued at £26 4s 4d. The King has pardoned Eleanor this sum, so that she can support herself and her four children, as can be seen by the letters she has under the signet. She asks that she might have a warrant at the Exchequer according to the terms of these letters, for the delivery of these goods.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] This bill has been granted by the King.[None on dorse]
Places mentioned
Andwell, [Hampshire].
People mentioned
[Thomas Arundel], Archbishop of York, Chancellor of England
Thomas Driffeld
[John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster], King of Spain (Castile and Leon).
Note
Thomas Arundel was Chancellor between 24 October 1386 and 4 May 1389 and between 27 September 1391 and 15 November 1396, and was Archbishop of York between 1388 (papal provision 3 April) and 25 September 1396, when he became Archbishop of Canterbury. This petition would therefore seem to date from 1388-1389 or from 1391-1396. A note on the guard prefers the former.
