Nature of request
The bakers and victuallers of Coventry state that it was established by the statute of Winchester, and has been used throughout the realm since time immemorial, that all bakers are to make their bread of a certain weight according to the price of a quarter of wheat, but that the Mayor of Coventry is forcing them to make their bread of a heavier weight, to their great impoverishment. They request letters patent under the great seal that their bread is to be of the correct weight and assize according to the statute of Winchester, and not otherwise.
