Nature of request
John Thomas, formerly gaoler of the King's gaol called the Speech House in Canterbury, states that on the eve of St Clement in the King's eighteenth year three men and a woman, imprisoned in the gaol for debt, escaped, and that because of this he was imprisoned there for a long time, and then released on mainprise to pay £48 for this escape. He has sold all his goods and chattels and paid everything except £28, which he is unable to pay except with the aid of good Christians. He requests special protection for a year, so that he can travel the realm collecting the alms of good Christians in order to pay this sum.

Datable to the reign of Richard II, after St Clement's eve 18 Richard II (22 November 1394). Possibly datable to 1399, as other petitions formerly in Chancery Files 459, such as SC 8/299/14943, SC 8/299/14944, SC 8/299/14946 and SC 8/299/14947, are. CPR 1396-9, p.45, the grant to John Colley of the fine for the escape of John Spryng, Roger Twesden and John Pelham from the gaol of Canterbury castle, dated 23 October 1396, may also be relevant.
