Reference
SC 8/299/14941
Date
[1399]
Description
Petitioners
Henry Humberston (Humberstone), citizen of Lincoln and collector of the tenth in Lincoln.
Name(s)
Humberston (Humberstone), Henry
Addressees
Bishop of Exeter, Chancellor of England.
Occupation
collector of the tenth in Lincoln
Nature of request
Henry Humberston states that on the Thursday before the feast of St Thomas the Apostle in the King's twenty-second year, while he was exercising his office in Lincoln, he was assaulted, beaten and left for dead by Henry Marshall, servant of John Norman, with Norman's assent, and that they continue to threaten him and lie in wait to kill him, so that he does not dare to leave his house to collect the rest of the tenth. Because of Norman's wealth and power the officers of the city do not dare to deal with him according to the law. He requests a writ of menace against Norman and Marshall, addressed to the sheriff, and another writ to have them come before the King's council at the quindene of Easter next, to answer to the King for contempt and to the petitioner for this trespass, so that he may in the meantime both live and collect the remainder of the tenth in security.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Lincoln, [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
[Edmund Stafford], Bishop of Exeter, Chancellor of England

Note
From the mention of the Tuesday before the feast of St Thomas, 22 Richard II (17 December 1398), and of the quindene of Easter next, this petition is apparently datable to the first three-four months of 1399.
