Nature of request
William Lyndwod states that on the Monday after the Trinity, in the King's nineteenth year, in the parish of St Margaret, Westminster, in the county of Middlesex, he delivered a letter of the privy seal to Hugh Gandeby, for 100 marks granted by the king to Thomas Mordak in compensation for the goods which he had earlier forfeited; and he retained Hugh for a certain sum, to be of his counsel in suing to Thomas Arundell, then Chancellor of England, to make letters patent on this letter of the privy seal, and to deliver them to William. The Chancellor granted these letters patent, and ordered Hugh to issue them under the great seal; but Hugh made away with the letter of the privy seal and kept it in his own hands, to receive the 100 marks for his own use, deceiving and wronging William to the sum of 200 marks.
