Description

Name(s)
de Ivehyth, John
Addressees
Bishop of Winchester, Chancellor of England.
Occupation
clerk of the King's household
Nature of request
John de Ivehyth states that John de Bridford gave the Abbot and Convent of Durford the manor of Westbury with appurtenances in Compton near Guildford, to set up a chantry in Compton church, on the condition that if the chantry was not left vacant for fifteen days, then the King could enter the manor and give it to whom he wished; and it has now been vacant for three years. The manor is held of a mesne lord, whose heir is under age and in the King's wardship, and the King has given this mesne manor to John, with instructions to find the charge for the chantry. He has sued for a long time to have the King's right and title acknowledged by the country, but has been obstructed by the late Robert Loxle and Robert Loxle his son, to whom the Abbot and convent had alienated the manor for term of their lives. He requests a writ to the escheator of Surrey to inquire into this matter.
