? No Petitioner named
Nature of request
Letter to the Chancellor from the Mayor and people of Lincoln, recommending William Virly for the office of clerk of the statute merchant in Lincoln, and asking that he might be appointed, as they have had no clerk since Adam de Thorp's deputy was chased from the city at the beginning of August, with the small part of the seal of the statute, by the threats and menaces of Thomas de Carleton and John Judkyn.
Nature of endorsement
To the King's Chancellor.
Places mentioned
Lincoln, Lincolnshire.
People mentioned
Chancellor of England
Mayor and people of Lincoln
William Virly
Adam de Thorp, clerk of the statute merchant in Lincoln
Thomas de Carleton of Lincoln
John Judkyn
Nicholas de Cauntelow, justice.
Note
Letter dated 8 April.CPR 1338-40 p.198 is dated 27 January 1339; but this was superseded by the appointment of Thomas de Carleton on 5 February 1339 (CPR 1338-40, p.202). Adam de Thorpe is then appointed for life on 25 April 1339 (CPR 1338-40, p.254), and allowed to exercise his office by deputy on 2 March 1340 (CPR 1338-40, p.433).Thomas de Carleton is appointed again on 2 August 1340 (CPR 1340-1343 p.14), and it seems likely that this is after he chased Thorp's deputy from the city by threats. CPR 1340-1343 pp.323-4 is dated 15 September 1341 and mentions a previous session held before Nicholas de Cauntelow and others, to hear and determine oppressions by the King's ministers, which is probably the session in which Thomas' guilt was established. From all this 1341 seems the most likely date for this letter, although 1342 or later would be possible. SC 8/56/2758 shows Virly as clerk: it either dates from the brief period of his appointment in 1339, or suggests that this request was successful and that he was re-appointed.
