Date
[? 1333]
Description
Petitioners
William de Feriby of Ravenser Odd.
Name(s)
de Feriby, William
Addressees
Chancellor.
Nature of request
William de Feriby states that a writ was sent to him to send his ship, the 'St Mary Cog' of Ravenser Odd, to serve the King in Scotland, which arrived last Friday. This ship is not in the country, nor is its return expected, and he also lacks equipment - and he is prepared to aver the truth of this by twelve men of Ravenser Odd. He asks the Chancellor to send a writ to John de Cotes and Richard, son of Thomas Keling, to send their ship, the 'Good Year' of Ravenser Odd, instead, as they were first ordered by writ and then chosen by the Bailiffs and community of Ravenser Odd to do this.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Ravenser Odd, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
Scotland.
People mentioned
John de Cotes
Richard [Keling], son of Thomas Keling
Thomas Keling.
Note
CCR 1333-7 p.99 is dated 29 March 1333, and seems very similar to the writ that William claims to have received - only the name of the ship is different. This might be due to a mistake, or this ship might be a replacement for the unavailable 'St Mary Cog', or this might be another occasion altogether: but it gives an approximate date for the petition.
