Date
[1330-1333]
Description
Petitioners
Community of Pembrokeshire.
Addressees
Bishop of Winchester, Chancellor of England.
Nature of request
The community of Pembrokeshire request a wise and suitable governor to govern their county, as since the death of the Earl of March, who was warden of Pembrokeshire by the King's grant because of the minority of Laurence de Hastyng, they have been without governance, and malefactors have been emboldened to kill, rob and maim.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Pembrokeshire, [Wales].
People mentioned
[John Stratford], Bishop of Winchester, Chancellor of England
[Roger de Mortimer], Earl of March, warden of Pembrokeshire
Laurence de Hastyng (Hastings), [Earl of Pembroke].
Note
Datable to 1330-1333 by mention of John Stratford, Bishop of Winchester and Chancellor of England. A Richard Simond is mentioned as Steward of Pembrokeshire on 14 October 1331 (CCR 1330-3 pp.270-271), and on 3 December 1331 an unnamed Steward (probably Richard Simond) is mentioned (CCR 1330-3 pp.405-406). Simond's appointment might have been as a result of this petition, but on the other hand this petition might be against him as inadequate for the office.
