Description
Petitioners
Brothers of the Hospital of St Bartholomew outside Oxford.
Addressees
John de Sendale, Chancellor of England.
Nature of request
[Damaged and partially illegible.]The brothers of the Hospital of St Bartholomew outside Oxford complain about the great wrongs done to them by their Warden, Peter de Luffenham: that does not share the house's alms among them equally as his predecessor, William de Westbury, used to do, but takes the portions of two brothers for himself, and others for his chaplain, his clerk, his servant, and his palfrey; that he has tried to appropriate their corn to his own use, and complained to the escheator when they would not allow this, and prevents the brothers from sowing corn, pasturing their livestock or roofing their buildings, and that he has sent away the brothers' carters and other servants; that he will not visit the sick brothers as he ought to; that he takes more than his share of the young pigeons in the hospital's dovecote; that he received some arrears of the King's alms and spent them himself, without sharing them with the brothers; and that, when William de Westbury during his life owed Geoffrey de Castre £7, and assigned certain goods to make payment, Peter appropriated to himself the said goods, so that Geoffrey could not be served. They request a remedy, as they have nothing from which to pay Geoffrey.
