Description
Petitioners
People of Southampton and elsewhere in the realm and of the King's other lands.
Addressees
Chancellor.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that they have sued to the King of France on the matter of a petition of theirs, recommended by the Chancellor to the council of the King of France on the eve of Trinity last year, in response to which William de Villariis has ordained letters which are prejudicial to the King and to them, and contrary to the truce, but have not been successful.1) They ask that John Pieres, John de Blubury and John de Thoresby might be ordered to examine their petition to the King of France and its response, and the response of the King of England's council on a related matter, and to inform the Chancellor with regard to the preservation of the rights of the King and of his subjects in this matter.2) They ask for consideration of rebellions and other crimes tending to the confiscation of the Duchy of Aquitaine by the French in the reign of Edward I, and to force him to cease to defend his and his subjects' rights against the Scots.3) They ask for consideration of remedies provided in the time of Edward I to preserve the king and his subjects unharmed in all the aforesaid articles and the defence of their rights against the Scots.4) They ask for consideration of the reasons and causes why the King's father was prevented from using these remedies and defences of his right against the Scots, and the many breaches of the truces by the Scots in the early part of his father's reign.
