Date
[c. 1307-c. 1317]
Description
Petitioners
Iorwerth ap Phelip Gogh of Llechog.
Name(s)
ap Phelip Gogh, Iorwerth
Addressees
Chancellor.
Nature of request
Iorwerth ap Phelip Gogh states that after the death of his father nine carucates of land which he held in the commote of Twrcelyn came into the hand of Llywelyn, Prince of Wales, and he remained in Llywelyn's wardship because he was under age. When Edward I took Wales, Otto de Grandison, then Justice of North Wales, inquired into Iorwerth's right and delivered the lands to him. He held them peacefully until the present King was Prince of Wales and Hugh Daudeleye Justice of North Wales, when Gruffudd ap Oweyn took them into the Prince's hand. They have remained in the King's hand since then for default of suit. He requests a writ to Roger de Mortymer, Justice of North Wales, to inquire into his right, so that the King's court can be certified of legality.

Places mentioned
Llechog, [Anglesey, Wales]
Twrcelyn commote, [Anglesey, Wales]
North Wales.
People mentioned
Llywelyn [ap Gruffudd], Prince of Wales
Edward [I], King of England
Otto de Graunzon (Grandison), Justice of North Wales
Hugh Daudeleye (Audley), Justice of North Wales
Gruffudd ap Oweyn (Owain)
Roger de Mortymer (Mortimer), Justice of North Wales.
Note
Roger de Mortimer was Justice of North Wales between July 1307 and January 1308, and between November 1316 and October 1317. The petition would therefore seem to date from one of these periods. The writ for CIM 1307-49 no.2102 is dated 13 November 14 Edward II (1320), but it is addressed to Roger de Mortimer as Justice of Wales, not of North Wales.
