Nature of request
Lewis, Bishop of Durham, states that his right to visit the church of Northallerton and other churches in Allertonshire has been wrongly disputed by the Archbishop of York, who is now intending to make a visitation himself. The Bishop of Durham has appealed to the Pope, and the case is pending in court Christian, but, in the meantime, the Archbishop has claimed that there is lay power in the churches, and has obtained writs to the sheriff of Yorkshire and to the great men of those parts to expel it, in order to have himself put in possession by lay power. The Bishop asks that these writs might be repealed, and the lay power expelled on both sides until the plea is determined in court Christian, which has the cognisance in this case. And because writs have been issued to the sheriff of Northumberland to proclaim that no-one should dare to come armed to the aid of the Bishop, to obstruct the Archbishop in his visitation, he asks that similar writs should be issued to the sheriff of Yorkshire, to forbid anyone from coming armed to the aid of the Archbishop.
