Description
Petitioners
Reginald de Dyk.
Name(s)
de Dyk, Reginald
Addressees
Chancellor.
Nature of request
Reginald de Dyk states that, in the ninth year of the King's reign, Hugh Daudele, now Earl of Gloucester, was commissioned to bring 100 archers from the counties of Kent, Surrey and Sussex to Newcastle upon Tyne, and he appointed Reginald in his place to array, clothe and equip these archers at the cost of the country. But when it was time for them to leave, John de Frenigham, Sheriff of Kent, had not fully levied the money for this from his county, so Reginald, in order not to delay their departure, paid for their clothes himself. He had an assurance from John that he would be able to levy the money, but before he could do so, he was replaced as Sheriff by Stephen de Cobham, who refused to levy any of this money. Reginald requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] When good advice has been had about this petition, you are to do as well as you can so that things are expedited.[On dorse] The said Reginald is to come before the King's council to inform them about the circumstances touching this business more fully than is contained in the petition.
