Nature of request
Copies of three documents, parts of which are damaged and incomplete:1) Accusations made against John de Furneus, who claims to be rector of Ainderby Steeple, by Michael de Harcla and John de Skyren, appointed as commissaries in this case, that he has gained possession of this church without any examination of his person, and that he is illiterate and ignorant of Latin, that he wastes the fruits of the church, and that he has large debts, making him totally unsuitable for his post.2) Further accusations: that John de Furneus assaulted Hugh Hode, clerk, and that he has refused to obey the commands of the vicar-general of the archdeacon of Richmond, although he took a corporal oath to do so.3) Writ from Edward II containing a prohibition against proceeding further in the case, until it has been decided whether the church is of the advowson of the heir of Robert de Furneus or the advowson of the Earl of Richmond.
