Date
[1301]
Description
Petitioners
John de Halghton, Bishop of Carlisle.
Name(s)
de Halghton, John
Addressees
Places mentioned
Carlisle, [Cumberland]
Scotland.
Nature of request
The Bishop of Carlisle requests that the King allow him £30 for the meadows and herbage of the demesne of Carlisle castle which were extended yearly to £10, and which were in one year eaten and consumed by the Welsh and Irish and the King's own host on their way to Scotland.
Nature of endorsement
A writ of Chancery should be made ordering the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer to enquire what damages the bishop sustained on this occasion and to cause allowance to be made to him in his farm.
Note
Dated on the guard to 1301, with reference to CCR 1296-1302, p. 420, an order to enquire into the petitioner's damages and to cause him to have allowance for the same, in accordance with this petition. It is also noted on the guard that it might date to c. 1304, with reference to an inquisition, commission of enquiry and acquittal resulting from the bishop of Carlisle's complaint that his herbage had been depastured (CIM 1219-1307, p. 527, no.1941; CPR 1301-7, pp. 272-3; CCR 1302-7, pp. 142-3). However 1301 is most likely since the description of the bishop's complaint in the Close Rolls is almost identical to that of the petition.
