Description
Petitioners
Merchants of Cologne of the Hanse of Almaine.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The merchants of Cologne of the Hanse of Almaine enfranchised in London and other parts of England, who bring Rhenish wine to sell in England, request remedy because Waldeshef caused their wine to be arrested demanding from them two tuns of wine (worth over £10) for 40s., as he does for wine of Gascony, when he should not charge for such wine unless it is with other merchandises, wherefore the merchants purchased a writ of Chancery to the treasurers and barons of the Exchequer to have Waldeshef and other butlers from the reigns of Edward I and Henry III come before them to certify the court whether or not he had the right to such prises, but no judgment was given.
Nature of endorsement
The treasurer and barons of the Exchequer should be ordered to proceed to finally determine the business between the King and the merchants concerning prises of wine, and if for any reason they cannot proceed without consulting the King, they should certify the King and his great council about this next Wednesday.
