Description
Petitioners
Prior and canons of Ivychurch.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The prior and canons of Ivychurch request remedy because Edward II by his charter granted them 100s. yearly forever from his manor of Clarendon to light their house, but often the bailiff of the manor has not paid them, for which they have sued in Chancery and by petition in Parliament, and the bailiff, ordered by writ to pay or to certify the court why he could not, answered to the Parliament held at Northampton that he could not levy the amount from the manor, and at the Parliament held at Salisbury the bailiff was again ordered to pay by another writ, but nothing was done. By these suits the petitioners have incurred great costs and expenses and the arrears now amount to £500. They request that they may have a farm of 100s in Wiltshire or that the sheriff of Wiltshire be assigned to pay them the 100s yearly with arrears.1)
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council, if it pleases the King, that if they cannot reasonably be served by the issues of the manor, an assignment of their money should be made so that the alms don't fail for this reason.2) And then before the King, it was answered as follows: the treasurer, barons and chamberlains of the Exchequer should be ordered to pay yearly to the petitioners the 100s. according to the form of the charter, and the treasurer and barons should advise the King how they can well be served in Wiltshire or elsewhere.
