SC 8/279/13902
Date
[1327-1377]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Cambridge.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The burgesses of Cambridge request remedy because, whereas the King granted to the University of Cambridge that if a clerk breaks the law he should be taken and imprisoned until released by the chancellor, the chancellor releases them without amends being made emboldening them to re-offend, and that if anyone trespasses against a clerk he should be imprisoned until he has made amends, so that whenever a clerk complains the trespasser is kept in prison without being brought into court, when he is often innocent of the trespass and cannot be released by any writ.
Nature of endorsement
A writ should go to the chancellor of the university that he should come to the Exchequer concerning any of the burgesses named within at the next Parliament, for him and the whole university.
Places mentioned
Cambridge, [Cambridgeshire].
People mentioned
University of Cambridge.
Note
This petition dates to the reign of Edward III. In 1418 the chancellor and scholars of Cambridge state that Edward III had issued letters to the mayor and bailiffs of the town of Cambridge forbidding them to release any prisoner committed by the chancellor or his deputy pursuant to any writ ('Folios ccxxi - ccxxxi: Nov 1418 - ', Calendar of letter-books of the city of London: I: 1400-1422 (1909), pp. 206-19).
