Nature of request
Memo that on the Friday on the feast of St Luke Weston came before the chancellor, treasurer, Green and Wollore and was ordered to inform the King how the lands of Bigod were given to Brotherton. He told how when he was in the company of the King's grandfather, the King said that he would grant the heirs male engendered by himself and Queen Margaret certain lands to a certain value, and afterwards Brotherton and his brother Edmund were born. After his death, the Queen asked her son the King to grant her children lands as their father wished. Then Despenser came and said to Hardon that he was Queen Margaret's steward and that the King had ordained for Brotherton and Edmund to have a certain amount of land to them and their heirs males (but Weston did not know what the correct amount was). Then Hardon and the others of the council asked Despenser what would happen if Brotherton and Edmund only had heirs female and he answered that the King should always have power to advance his nieces. Afterwards the King's father gave Brotherton the earldom of Norfolk, the office of Marshal and the lordship of Striguil, of which Brotherton was seized for a long time. Segrave and Darcy had the keeping of the castle of Striguil, but in what manner Weston did not know. He also said that in the time of King John, Strongbow was earl marshal and had the lordship, which later came into the hand of Bigod.
