Description

de Bray, Theobald

King.
Nature of request
Bray states that Humphrey de Montz held tenements in Whitfield of Henry III by serjeanty, which were taken into the King's hand by Passelewe and his associates, assigned by the King to hold an enquiry in Northamptonshire touching alienated serjeanties, after they found that Montz had alienated some of this land without licence. The residue was arrented at 40s yearly and charged with the service of a fourth part of a knight's fee. Now, with the King's permission, Bray has purchased for him, his wife and his heirs, the same tenements which Peter and Isabel de Montz hold for their lives. He therefore requests that the King discharge the tenements from knight's service and grant the said 40s to Bray and his wife to be taken from Peter and Isabel during their lives, and that Bray, his wife and heirs may hold the same tenements of the King and his heirs discharged of the said 40s and knight's service, by the arrentment of 2s yearly for the said knight's service, so that they hold by this and the service of keeping a hunting dog only.
