Nature of request

The abbot and convent of Westminster recount that the King's progenitors gave their predecessors the tithe of Droitwich, which they received from that time, as appears by allowances attached to this petition, until the death of Queen Margaret who held the vill as her dower, after which the King's father in the eleventh year of his reign [1317-8] by his charter gave the vill to Queen Isabella and then to Woodstock, his brother, at the value of £89 5s yearly, for which the petitioners requested remedy at the last parliament seeking justice by a writ of Chancery to the treasurer and chamberlains that they should certify that the petitioners have demanded the tithe and whether they should receive it. Now the treasurer and chamberlains have certified the abbot's estate to the King, and the petitioners request that they may receive the tithe at the Exchequer and that arrears be paid or allowed from the abbot's debts.1)

Nature of endorsement

It should be certified to the King and council how the allocation was made before the time of Queen Isabella and where it was made.2) Because the abbot has shown before the council William the Conqueror's charter giving the tithe of Droitwich to his predecessors, and it was found by certification before the council by the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that the abbots of Westminster have been paid at the Exchequer, sometimes by money and sometimes by allowance from his debts etc. of £8 for the tithe of Droitwich and by the hand of Queen Marguerite when she had the farm of Droitwich until it was delivered to Queen Isabella who paid nothing because her charter did not mention the abbot's tithe, which farm has now been delivered to the Earl of Kent without mentioning the same tithe, the treasurer and barons should be ordered by writ to make allowance to the abbot of the arrears for times past in the debts which he owes to the King and henceforth to pay the tithes to the abbot at the Exchequer.
