Description
Petitioners
William Osseti of Agen, notary.
Name(s)
Osseti, William
Addressees
King.
Occupation
notary
Nature of request
Osseti states that, by the order of the King's bailiff of Agen, he received two instruments, one concerning the pledge of Curtis and his companions upon the announcement of Bernard de Deveze's death, and the bailiff, by order of the seneschal of Gascony, prohibited Osseti on pain of 100 silver marks that he not take anything from the said instrument except on the part of Curtis and his companions and the seneschal. Afterwards, the King of France's seneschal of Perigord and Carcassonne, at the instigation of John de Deveze, ordered him, on pain first of 100 silver marks and then of 200 silver marks, to give a copy of the instrument to Deveze, notwithstanding the prohibition ordered by the seneschal of Agen. Because he did not wish to do this, or violate the prohibition Osseti, he was fined 100 silver marks to the King of France and £20 tournois to Deveze, concerning which Osseti appealed at the court of France at his own expense, spending as much as he had been allowed by the seneschals of Agen, both Pecche and Pessagno, and more. He therefore asks that he be quit of the said fine, and released from the fine, his expenses and damages.1)
Nature of endorsement
He petitions for himself and his successors that such fines be remitted.2) To the other two, he should show the letters which he has from the seneschal, and after their examination, justice should be done.

Note
This petition probably dates to c. 1320 since the petitioner also petitioned with William Curtis (SC 8/278/13855), who himself petitioned in 1318-22 (SC 8/278/13851). Peche and Pessaigne, both described as late seneschals of Gascony, held that office in the period 1316-19.
