Description
Petitioners
William Curtis, late acting seneschal of Agen.
Name(s)
Curtis, William
Addressees
King.
Occupation
acting seneschal of Agen
Nature of request
1) Curtis requests that whereas Puis was accused with many others of stealing £60 tournois left in Montflanquin by two scholars going to study in Toulouse, for which he surrendered himself as a fugitive and entered the dormitory of the Austin friars of Agen, and because Curtis, as acting seneschal of Agen, could have served as Puis's keeper and ensured that justice was done to him as in similar cases, the friars sued him before the constable of Bordeaux and for two years they brought actions against him and caused him to be excommunicated, that no friar or other person presume to do justice to the King's ministers and officials as Puis is now free and was not suspended for his forfeiture when John de Puis and his companions were suspended for the same forfeiture. He also requests his damages and expenses incurred in this matter and that all actions against him cease and his excommunication be annulled.2) Curtis requests that whereas Pecche's sister was murdered at Agen by a member of the household of the chapter of St Caprasius of Agen and he, at the command of Savage, arrested Deveze for the murder, for which reason Deveze and the said chapter caused him to be excommunicated, that the King ordain that the guilty party should be punished for the murder, that all pleas against Curtis should cease and his excommunication be annulled, and that he may have his damages and expenses incurred in this matter.
Nature of endorsement
To both it is answered that inasmuch as the petitioner seeks to be provided with damages and expenses, it was dealt with when the King wrote to Gascony and Agen ordering them to make provision as seems best for the King's honour and the petitioner's profit.
