Date

Description
Petitioners
Lewis de Beaumont, Bishop of Durham.
Name(s)
de Beaumont, Lewis
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
Bishop of Durham
Nature of request
Lewis, Bishop of Durham requests:1) remedy because the late King of Scotland gave the manor of Wark in Tynedale to Anthony, late bishop of Durham, forever, which gift was confirmed by Edward I, and of which Anthony was seised for a long time until he went to the Court of Rome, at which time Edward I removed him from the same manor;2) remedy because the late King of Scotland gave £50 of land in the manor of Wark in Tynedale and the advowson of the church of Simonburn in the franchise of Wark in Tynedale to Anthony, late bishop of Durham, who was seised of the manor of Grindon and the adjoining lands and the advowson until Edward I brought a scire facias against him in the Parliament at Carlisle concerning the manor of Wark and the said advowson, when an original writ was never brought against him, but because he was at the Court of Rome at that time Anthony could not come to the Parliament, wherefore Edward I took the advowson and manor of Wark into his hand, the record and process of which is in the Exchequer at London. If Anthony had been in England or if the original writ had been brought before him, he would have appeared in court to defend his right.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] 1) Because it was witnessed before the council that the manor named within was taken into Edward I's hand by process had at his Parliament at Carlisle this petition cannot be answered before the record has been examined. And so the treasurer and chamberlain are ordered by writ to cause the record and process to be examined.2) Because the petition claims that the manor and advowson were taken into the late King's hand at his Parliament at Carlisle by process, the treasurer and chamberlains are ordered to cause the record and process to come before the King at his next Parliament.[On dorse] He should sue to cause the record and process to come according to the response made to his other petitions if it seems expedient to him.
