Date
[c. 1389]
Description
Petitioners
Roger de Mortimer, son and heir of Edmund de Mortimer, Earl of March.
Name(s)
de Mortimer, Roger
Addressees
King and lords of Parliament.
Nature of request
Roger, son and heir of Edmund de Mortimer, late earl of March, a minor and the King's ward, recounts that his ancestors founded Walsingham priory with its prior to be elected with the patron's permission and installed by the bishop, which right of patronage belongs to the King during his minority, but John, prior of Walsingham purchased Papal Bulls naming him abbot and granting him power to govern the house as an abbey, whereon the King sent his writ of prohibition to the prior forbidding this and similar prohibitions to the canons of the house, to which the prior responded that he would do nothing to their prejudice or against law and custom provided that he could use his bull with the canons obeying him as abbot. The petitioner requests that the King send a new writ of prohibition to the prior since the bull was granted on condition that it was not to the prejudice or damage of anyone, and at the petition of the prior and convent when the convent knew nothing about it, and the Pope made him abbot without any election.
Nature of endorsement
He should sue in Chancery to have the said prohibition.
Places mentioned
Walsingham, [Norfolk].
People mentioned
Edmund Mortemer (Mortimer), Earl of March
John [Snoring], Prior of Walsingham.
Note
This petition dates to c. 1384 since in March of this year custody of the priory was given to the sub-prior, on behalf of the petitioner, because of contention between the sub-prior and John Snoring, prior, who was wasteful of its revenues in his desire to secure the position of abbot (CPR 1381-5::p.383).
