Nature of request
The mercers of London request:1) that the statute made in the Parliament held at Westminster in the sixth year of the King's reign [1382] - which forbids victuallers from holding office unless there is no other sufficient person, and then only if they cease to be victuallers while in office - might be put in force and execution in London as elsewhere;2) that the statute made in the same Parliament - which allows all victuals, including fish, to be brought into London and sold by denizens and aliens of the city - [be upheld];3) that anyone who is mayor of London for a year should then be discharged of the office for the next five years;4) that whereas many men of London are falsely indicted and accused of treason and other felonies at the instigation of Brembre and his accomplices to keep the governance of London in their hands, that the King appoint impartial judges to hear and determine the said indictments and accusations so that justice can be done;5) that henceforth those elected mayor be charged on their oath at the Exchequer to uphold the statute granted concerning fishers and victuallers, because no mayor of London since Northampton has done so.
