SC 8/277/13814
Date
[1327-1377]
Description
Petitioners
Heirs and land tenants of William de Evesham.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The heirs and tenants of Evesham request remedy because whereas Henry III granted to Marshal and his heirs a place in the King's high street in the parish of St Clement outside Temple Bar in London to build a forge for a yearly rent of six horse-shoes, and then a place adjoining the forge for his dwelling for a yearly rent of 4d, and Evesham purchased from Marshal's heir only the place arrented at 4d yearly, the six horseshoes are demanded yearly from the petitioners by summons of the Exchequer, when they are not and have never been tenants of that land.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that the request is reasonable; a writ should be sent to the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer that neither Evesham nor his heirs were ever tenants of the forge but only of the said place arrented at 4d, and that they should be discharged of the six horse-shoes thus demanded, and the heirs of Marshal or other tenants of the forge should be charged.
Places mentioned
St Clement outside Temple Bar (St Clement Danes), London.
People mentioned
William de Evesham
Henry [III], King of England
Walter le Mareschal (Marshal).
Note
This petition must date from the reign of Edward III since King Henry is referred to as the King's great-grandfather.
