Description

King.
Nature of request
The community of the barony of Lewes recount that the King has an ongoing dispute with the Earl of Warenne regarding warren and chace in lands that are not of the Earl's demesne, including the claim that the Earl held several chaces and warrens without warrant in 70 vills in the barony of Lewes, which presentment, made by the oaths of good men, was annulled and undone by a corrupt and procured jury who are of the Earl's affinity. They request a better inquisition by a jury from each hundred of the county, and that the King ordain by statute that henceforth no one shall course or fish anywhere where the King has established that no separate warren or chace can be claimed.
