Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/275/13717
Date
[? 1278]
Description
Petitioners
Maurice Camme.
Name(s)
Camme, Maurice
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Maurice Camme states that he brought a writ of novel disseisin on the Thursday on the morrow of St Lawrence before Hengham and his companions, complaining that John de Schetchevile, William de Walybreus, Amice his wife and others wrongfully disseised him of his free tenement in Wotton; but someone claiming to be John's bailiff has claimed that Maurice brought a writ of entry against John in the Bench before he acquired this writ, and has vouched the record, and the case has been adjourned. Maurice is prepared to aver that he brought no such writ, and asks that the assize might go ahead so that if such a plea existed, the plaintiff may receive nothing from his writ of disseisin, but that otherwise he might recover what he demands together with his damages; and that if the disseisors have falsified the record, that he might not lose by that; and that any error in the process may be corrected.
Nature of endorsement
Hengham and his associates should view the process and if there is an error there they should correct it; and they should provide swift justice.
Places mentioned
Wotton [unidentified].
People mentioned
Ralph de Hengham, justice
John de Schetchevile
William de Walybreus (Whalesbrewe)
Amice [de Walybreus (Whalesbrewe)], wife of William de Whalesbrewe.
Note
There are unrelated mentions of William de Whalesbrewe in CCR 1272-9 p.224 (31 December 1274), p.411 (December 1276) and p.508 (15 October 1278) - a range of dates that would agree with the hand of this petition. The morrow of St Lawrence (11 August) fell on a Thursday in the year this petition was presented: this makes 1278 the most likely year, but 1272, 1289, 1295, 1300 and 1306 are also possible, although the last two would seem to be too late for the hand.
