Reference
SC 8/275/13714
Date
[1301-1302]
Description
Petitioners
On behalf of the King
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petition states that the King has brought a writ of quare impedit against Francis de Gaytan concerning the archdeaconry of Richmond which is vacant, and that he has a day on the morrow of St John: but this will not give enough time for the matter to be heard before the end of term at the quindene of St John, and great harm will come to the vills and manors of the archdeaconry if the case is delayed until the octave of Michaelmas, especially as this writ should be more urgent than almost any other. It asks the King to order the Chancellor and justices to ordain a day for the King for the writ as soon after the quindene as is convenient, in order to expedite the business.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Richmond archdeaconry, [Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Francis de Gaytan.
Note
The petition would appear to date from the period 1301-1302 as the petitioners predecessor was consecrated as bishop of Lausanne in 1301, and the petitioner was certainly acting as archdeacon by 10 January 1303 (CPR 1301-7, p.102).
