King and council.
Nature of request
[This petition is badly faded and much is illegible.] The petitioners state that severe complaints have come to their ears from merchants of the Duchy, that Stephen de Avindona, the king's butler in England, has taken their wines, imprisoned some of them, forced those who kept their wines to sell them to him at the price he was prepared to pay, and committed other outrages against them; and that he boasts about this openly. They request a remedy, so that Gascon merchants can in future come safely to England with their merchandise, without anyone presuming to treat them in this way.
