Reference
SC 8/272/13568
Date
[c. 1307]
Description
Petitioners
Wentiliane (Gwenllian), daughter of Llewellyn, formerly prince of Wales.
Name(s)
Wentiliane (Gwenllian)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Gwenllian requests the king's grace as the king's father promised her £100 of land or rent when she entered the house of Sempringham, and he commanded to the then treasurer that she be provided with £20 from the Exchequer annually.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Sempringham, [Norfolk].
People mentioned
Llewellyn [ap Gruffudd], Prince of Wales
Walter de Langeton (Langton), then treasurer.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1307 as the petition seems likely to date to the early years of Edward II. Rees suggests that this petition was presented shortly after the fall of Edward II, but it seems more likely that it was presented much earlier in Edward II's reign and that the late king is Edward I and not Edward II as Langton was Edward I's treasurer and only remained very briefly in office under Edward II (Petitions Relating to Wales, p.458).
