The dean of St Martin's requests that the chancellor be commanded to ordain that the strange men that the sheriffs and many of the commons of London forcibly removed from sanctuary in his church be restored to sanctuary.

Note
The petition is dated to 1440 as it refers to the actions of Malpas and Marchall as sheriffs of London and that the alleged offence occurred on 1 September. The sheriffs served from Michaelmas 1439 to Michaelmas 1440 (List of Sheriffs, p.203). In addition the sheriffs were ordered to restore the men to sanctuary on 10 September 1440 (CCR 1435-41, p.392).
