The petition dates to 1317 as an exemption from arrest was granted on 20 November 1317 (CPR 1317-21, pp.53, 55). Calendar of Patent Rolls, Edw II, vol. III, 1317-1321, (Public Record Office, 1903), pp. 53, 55 (Exemption from arrest for merchants of the towns of Bermeo, Bilbao, Placentia, Allequetio, and of other towns of Biscay in Spain, and for their goods found within the power of the king on account of any debt, unless wherein they themselves are the principles or sureties, or for any trespass committed by the subjects of the king of Spain, as Alfonso [XI] king of Spain has by his letters notified to the king that merchants of Biscay are not bound to make satisfaction for the defaults of his vassals)
