Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/269/13449
Date
[1384]
Description
Petitioners
William Andrew, Bishop of Meath.
Name(s)
Andrew, William
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Bishop of Meath
Nature of request
Andrew requests that he is granted a licence to defend his church, and a licence for Sprot, whom the bishop has presented to the archdeaconry of Meath, to pursue and defend his possession of the office by law of the church. Following Sprot's institution the archbishop of Armagh received Carlisle to the same office by presentation of the king and he was intruded on the possession by force of arms.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Thomas Sprot, clerk, archdeacon of Meath
Archbishop of Armagh
William de Karlell (Carlisle).
People mentioned
Meath archdeaconry, [Ireland].
Note
The petition dates to 1384 as a licence was issued to the bishop and Sprot to pursue their claims on 16 January 1384, though this licence seems to have been issued in response to SC 8/184/9159 and not this particular petition (CPR 1381-5, pp.364-5). The matter seems to have been resolved by March 1384 when Sprot's possession of the office was ratified (CPR 1381-5, p.390).
